On the nature of verbal irony: is it a subtype of echoic use of language (cf. Sperber and Wilson), or a form of indirect negation (cf. Giora)? Both approaches are evaluated with a focus on the cognitive abilities that the processing of verbal irony requires. Sperber and Wilson's approach is favored.
