One of the main aims of this wide-ranging survey of the discipline of contact linguistics, is to provide a state-of-the-art account reducing the complex field to chartable order. Besides a history of the discipline and its methods and connections with neighbouring disciplines, sections are devoted to: more narrowly linguistic aspects; discourse analysis; conditions of contact; basic concepts; multilingualism; language change, maintenance and loss; linguistic awareness etc.
