Annotation

This book criticizes the essentialist view on gender and language and the related 'different and deficient' and 'different but equal' approaches that assign a set of distinct features to women's speech. As an alternative, it proposes the social constructionist view which conceptualizes gender as a system of social relations operating at individual, social structural and interactional levels. The similarity-hypothesis however may obscur differences in the strategies employed.
