The second volume in this late twentieth century overview of sociolinguistics examines how gender identities are established in and through patterns of language variation, the role of gender in language behavior, as well as sociolinguistic issues related to the communication of affective meaning, conversational routines, grammaticalization and language change, intertextuality, cross-cultural discourse patterns and their social implications.
