From a functional perspective, this work presents two 'foundational discussions', of linguistic meaning and of linguistic structure, merging the two in the ensuing description of tense. The author uses a 'European neo-structuralist' frame of reference in addition to modified versions of the functionalism and cognitivism of S. Dik and R.W. Langacker.
