This study on the functioning of singular reference provides a description of underlying entities and processes, incorporating pragmatic and psychological factors. Distinguishing between specificatory and explanatory theories, R. proposes a communicational instead of a predicate logic paradigm, whilst using the figure-ground model of singular reference to explain indexical reference and facts about referentially opaque contexts.
