Annotation

C. suggests there is a need to revive the old psychological distinction between conscious (phenic) and unconscious (cryptic) structures and processes. Whereas linguistic knowledge has so far mainly been regarded as unconscious, phenic structures and processes play a role since making sense of what is said is no doubt a conscious process. Such considerations are put forward with special reference to problems of language acquisition.
