Annotation

The author presents analyses of comparable intra- and intercultural encounters involving native speakers of English and Zulu in South Africa, focusing on how negative stereotypes of cultural and racial groups are generated or, when already existing, confirmed. These analyses suggest what sort of differences in sociocultural background and communication conventions contribute to the miscommunication, and relate the specific encounters to the larger, structural, historically given forces that infuence racial prejudice on a macro-level.
