Annotation

E. questions the clarity of the distinction between `direct' and `indirect' speech. The only useful criterion for the distinction is a shift in the deictic elements (from the reported speech situation in indirect speech to the actual speech situation indirect speech). In many languages those differences in reference are not formally coded in the sentence, hence, the distinction is not formally coded. Data from three languages of Nepal: Chamling, Nepali and Newari.
