A discussion about reference phenomena and about the verb `to refer'. It is argued that, in current approaches, often no distinction is made between the pragmatics of referring and the semantics of `refer', and that reference semanticists easily confusethe object of their attention, the referential use of language, with semantic aspects of the metareferential means (the verb `refer') people use to speak about it. As a result, the discussion of both suffer from the confusion.
