A study of pidgins. Contrary to most research on this subject, where pidgins are defined as `variable', `chaotic', and `lacking in grammar', the author argues that this over-emphasis on the variable nature of pidgins masks a potentially large set of important language universals, those of discourse-pragmatic or pre-syntactic communication. More specifically, this analysis focusses on aspects of topicality and topic continuity.
