The author analyses instances when a speaker evaluates his/her own speech (e.g. as `boring', `superficial', `courteous', etc ...). Three questions are asked: (a) What (linguistic) means does a speaker have at his/her disposal to make such evaluations?; (b) What aspects of speech are prone to be evaluated?; and (c) Why does a speaker evaluate his/her own speech?
