H. examines the relative frequencies of lexical items expressing doubt and certainty in English in written and spoken discourse. The aim is to provide data relevant to textbooks for English second language learners. A number of existing textbooks are evaluated with regard to their adequacy in teaching skills for expressing doubt and certainty.
