H. argues that, contrary to Government & Binding theorists' analysis, there is no PRO in Chinese, and that consequently, Chomsky's theory of control cannot apply to Chinese; that the semantic/thematic approach is also inadequate with respect to control in Chinese; and that the only adequate approach is a pragmatic one.
