Annotation

The author argues for the efficiency of cognitive grammar (Laboff, Langacker) in accounting for the relationship between pragmatic and semantic uses of a grammatical category such as case. The object of study is the Czech dative construction, which provides a rich array of pragmatic uses, resulting from speaker-manipulations of the boundaries of a dative sphere in order to project relationships connecting him/herself, the hearer, and the narrated event.
