Annotation
K. argues that style shifting in narrative can be seen as a sign of the speaker's involvement, his empathy towards the characters and incidents of the narrative, or of irony which involves a certain amount of distance between the speaker and what he says. Empathy and irony are examined in an experiment where Finnish university students were shown a 7 minute film with no dialogue and afterwards were asked to report the contents of the film.
