Analysis of `say'/`said' alternation in introductions of reported speech. The author examines the hypothesis that tense alternation in narrative dialog introducers may be related to the relative status of the reported speakers. The analysis is based on a corpus of American English narratives in which storytellers re-create conversations with figures of authority.
