K. examines the relationship between pragmatic structure in spontaneous personal narratives. More specifically, elements such as foreground/background, and event/non-event are taken into account. It is shown that prosodically marked structures are characteristic of the background portions of narratives. The data are narratives extracted from informal conversations between Japanese speaking in English and a non-Japanese speaking researcher.
