Annotation

The author argues that the philosophical theory of speech acts is a paradigmatic account of meaning in interpersonal communication, and not merely a logical, philosophical account of what it is for an individual to use language with sense and reference. In other words: meaning can best be understood as the recognition of a mutual intention between a speaker and listener, rather than just the analogical coincidence of two personal sets of linguistic experience.
