Annotation

L. tries to cope with the apparent paradox that under certain specified conditions, the less you say, the more you mean. His aim is to see whether it is possible to find mutual support from the Gricean principles of inference, the domain of conversational analysis, and the domain of syntax (with special reference to `Government and Binding') for some general inferential principles inherent in this phenomena of minimization.
