Annotation

The authors explain phonological universals such as segments and features in functional terms, i.e. with the aid of a `self-organizing model of phonological structure', in which the evolution of a phonological structure is `guided' by the constraint of producing sufficient perceptible benefits at an acceptable articulary cost.
