Analysis of the role of minimal interactive particles in the structure of conversation. The term `minimal particles' covers items such as pauses, filled pauses, hedges, listener feedback, hesitations, etc ... These are examined with regard to their constitutive functional role in structuring or directing the flow of conversational interaction. The author also discusses the sentence as a basic unit of analysis in pragmatic research.
