An experiment on interactive writing showing that speech and writing are not just situationally determined variants, but dimensions of language in their own right; that evaluations can be made both explicitely and implicitely in both dimensions; and that, while punctuation is an explicit means for expressing attitudes and involvement, implicit involvement is communicated by means of lexical choice, the use of pragmatic particles, and of specific syntactic constructions.
