The author examines the conceptual structure of dialogue as a sequence of actions, in which any action of one interlocutor is a reaction to actions of the other(s). The logical, `ideal' model of dialogue, with its necessary presupposition of mutually shared common ground is challenged, and replaced by a series of contextually bound actions in which understanding and common ground can (but do not have to) be dynamically constructed.
