Analysis of culture-specific patterns of communication among the male population of an urban neighborhood near the south side of Chicago. Within the frame work of the ethnography of communication, P. examines how `manliness' is asserted through communicative behavior. The results suggest that an important factor in this respect is the amount of speech production relative to the social situation or context.
