Theoretical-methodological essay on the nature and status of fieldwork in anthropological research. Within a view of fieldwork as a specific kind of intercultural interaction, P. discusses the ethnographic interview as an instance of intercultural conversation, and distinguishes two types of understanding the interview: (a) as a device to extract information from the informant, and (b) as a two-way conversation.
