Annotation

With the aim of approaching speech act theory from an etic, functional perspective, the author attempts to derive from it ways of including spoken messages within etic ethnographic ends and methods. The strategy applied is to reduce the classification of speech events to a taxonomy of functions which is a modification of Searle's taxonomy and to build a set of behavioral measures upon the functional classification.
