A study of language varieties in Kilivila (Trobiand islands), defined in terms of situational-intentional characteristics. Different varieties are examined through analysis of the metalinguistic terms used to denote them. Furthermore the general function of situational-intentional varieties is characterized through the concept of `ritual communication'.
