Annotation

Based on the observation of the poor applicability of existing theories in lexical semantics to the lexicon as a whole, the author aims to contribute to the construction of a more adequate theory by pointing out that there is at least one general distinction that can be maintained throughout the lexicon of any language, and that is likely to be of considerable use in systematizing the semantic analysis of lexical items. This distinction is closely linked up with the phenomenon of presupposition.
