Annotation

In communication with non-native speakers, native speakers tend to modify their speech, in order to facilitate communication. These modifications are usually simplifications, presumed to enhance mutual understanding. In the present study, the authors identify some such devices native speakers use that are counter-productive for communication with non-native speakers, such as inappropriate speech rate, inappropriate repair strategies, confusing syntax, and expressions of tension and frustration.
