A re-examination of the notion of cohesion in Halliday & Hasan (1976). It is argued that this notion can be redefined so that additional elements may be included. The authors center on `contextualization' and `thematic connection', which create cohesionthrough syntactic devices of adverb preposing and subject NP. Data from German and English.
