An introductory chapter to a volume on goals and discourse. Apart from a brief discussion of each of the papers of the volume. T. also challenges the assumption, implicit in much research, that goals and discourse are transparently linked. A case study of an intellectual discussion presents a more complicated picture of multiple goals with dynamic priority ranking.
