T. questions the descriptive power of the `adjacency pair' as a basic unit of conversational organization, by applying the notion to the analysis of conversational data and pointing out that there are utterances which are important contributors to the conversation and yet for which the notion fails to account. She then proposes the `three-part exchange' as a more adequate basic unit of conversational organization.
