On the basis of a theoretical discussion of linguistic variables drawn from studies in spoken and written discourse, a small corpus of radio magazine programmes is analyzed statistically in order to test the hypothesis that variation in radio language can be described as a variation along the continuum from speech to writing. It is concluded that radio language in general consists of hybrid forms of the two modalities.
