Annotation

The author examines the question of what role argumentation plays in the acquisition of communicative competence. He argues that the ability to argue (or to metacommunicate) coincides with the ability to speak, liberating the human being from a trial-and-error system. Communication and metacommunication (argumentation) are seen as a spiral, where every piece of ability on one side causes greater ability on the other side.
