W. engages in a normative study of arguments, with the aim of determining what factors, standards, or procedures should be adapted or appealed to in evaluating an argument as `good', `fallacious', etc ... In this light, two questions are asked: (a) what is an argument?, and (b) how is reasonable criticism of an argument possible? - i.e. without taking sides in the argument itself.
