W. examines the relation between literal meaning, sentence meaning, and speaker meaning. He first describes the position of current `orthodox' theories of meaning on this issue, points out some inadequacies of these accounts, and then proposes a new dichotomy labelled the primal/actual content distinction, which salvages the many important insights the `orthodoxy' has to offer, but avoids its difficulties.
