Annotation

An analysis, with implications for methodology, of the use of the historical present tense. Although this tense is very widely used in conversational narratives, its occurence within interviews is so infrequent as to be striking. An explenation can be found in the way in which the interview has a specific known place as a speech event in the culture of those whose speech is being studied. Data form American English.
