Descriptive analysis of two speech acts in American English: invitations and compliments. Results show that invitations fall into two categories: ambiguous and unambiguous, and that the majority of social commitments are reached through a process of negotiation. Compliments are found to be formulaic in nature, and the highly conventionalized form of the speech act is seen as serving to enhance its function.
