Building on the fact that conversational interactants often evaluate conversations in terms of a good/boring/... conversation; I had a nice chat with ...; It was difficult to make conversation with him/her; etc ..., the author aims to examine what makes a conversation `good', what norms and mechanisms are involved, and he proposes a theoretical frame for coping with this problem: a `theory of conversational quality'.
