The authors investigate the dynamics of language mixing as observed in Campus Kiswahili, a sociolect of Kiswahili spoken among Tanzanian academics on and around the Dar Es Sallam University hill. It is argued that this mixing process is not a random phenomenon, but can be shown to display internal (linguistic) and external (social) functionality.
