Analysis of the semantics of `closed class' elements (i.e. pronouns, tense markers, negation, case forms, conjunctions, etc ... as opposed to nouns, verbs, and adjectives) from the perspective of cognitive grammar. More specifically, the author aims to show by means of two experiments how the distinct senses of `down' (used in prepositional and/or adverbial function) are interrelated.
