Annotation

This article provides a pragmatic analysis of the rhetoric of tolerance used in a KCM (Koninklijk Commissariaat voor het Migantenbeleid) training program directed at police officers, aimed at promoting a positive image of migrants. It is explored whether this rhetoric conforms to the doctrine of homogeneity, which holds that homogeneous societies are facts of nature that cannot be disturbed without impunity. The paper also provides a brief replay of the futility, perversity and jeopardy arguments used by 'reactionaries' (as defined by A. Hirschman (1991)) against ethnic and cultural diversification of European societies.
