Annotation

The paper examines some common uses of language in which shared beliefs among hearers are critical (i.e. in situations where the speaker has more than one hearer). This investigation leads to an examination of speech act theory in general: it is argued that the findings require a rather fundamental addition to traditional theories of speech acts.
