Annotation

C. attempts to explain the reluctance of (Mandarin) Chinese to incorporate transliterations of foreign words (as opposed to translations of such words), and the high incidence of such borrowings in Japanese and Taiwanese, in terms of phonological and syntactical properties of the receiving languages, and in terms of the social and institutional contexts of the receiving societies.
