Annotation

S. challenges the adequacy of subordination as a measure of language complexity, claiming that in spoken discourse, many ideas or clauses introduced by subordinating conjunctions are not actually subordinate. It is further argued that the study of language complexity should take account of spoken discourse, and of the cultural and situational contexts of language use.
