An attempt to show that jokes possess semantic potential in conveying information just as non-humorous language does, based on Lyons' (1977: `Semantics') framework of three kinds of semantic information in language, and Raskin's (1984: `Semantic mechanisms of humor') script-based semantic theory of humor.
