The main purpose of the paper is to show that the rules governing parenthetic adjuncts (i.e. factive sentential adverbs like 'regrettably', modal sentential adverbs such as 'obviously', adverbial phrases like 'of course', parentheticals like 'I think', rhetorical tag questions, and some non-restrictive relative clauses) cannot be explained without referring to pragmatic factors.
