The problems Austin's and Searle's speech act theories pose when they are applied to real interaction, are shown to derive from their habit of taking utterances in isolation and explaining their force in terms of the speaker's intentions, instead of viewing that force as the result of the cooperation and negotiation between speaker and hearer.
