The idea that a definite article semantically conveys the idea of unicity is defended against recent pragmatic and cognitive approaches. However, the semantic level of unicity calls for a pragmatic complement where relevance, as defined by Sperber and Wilson, restricts the domain in which the unicity of the definite description is valid.
